Testimonials
A Parent's Testimonial
by Sol and Paul
Gage had just turned five when we learned of La Escuela, a Spanish Immersion
school in Vancouver. With an excellent command of the English language, our
concerns for Gage losing his vocabulary were few. But we had all of the normal
misconceptions of learning a second language. We thought he would be delayed
academically or socially or in speech. But our primary concern was about his
acceptance of a new school with a planned curriculum in a foreign language.
This is a major leap for a child. He would be meeting new people, immersed in
a foreign language and he would be expected to perform academically in this
foreign language. How foreign!
Gage eagerly began classes with La Escuela last fall. Within the first week he
had learned the basics (colors, shapes, numbers, and nouns). He was quickly
mastering the curriculum as well. Within the fi rst month, he began mixing up
his languages. Unconsciously, he would speak some English mixed with Spanish.
This told us that immersion was working. His brain was transmitting the languages
fluently in one steady stream. Within 60 days, Gage was conversing with students
and teachers in Spanish. Gage is more aware of the Spanish speaking community
around him. He is reaching out to the Spanish speaking community in the parks,
libraries, and our neighborhood. Gage is teaching his parents some Spanish too.
He is speaking the language with the same fluent and rhythmic dialect of a native
Spanish speaker. Gage, a blond-haired, blue-eyed boy, sounds just like a native
speaker.
La Escuela has provided the prescription for success in Spanish Immersion and
early childhood education. Native Spanish Speaking teachers, skilled in immersion
teaching both for curriculum and language, provide the linguistics and creative
mix of play and curriculum required to learn the language and academics. The
teachers engage the children in song, dance, play, and academic work. Gage
anxiously awaits each new day to learn more Spanish. La Escuela has been our
best investment in Gage. This school has demonstrated our child has a capacity
for learning that surpasses our imagination. What better gift can we give our
child other than a love for learning, a love for a second language and an atmosphere
of song, dance, play, fun, and academics that our child deserves?
