FAQ's
What is immersion?
In an immersion environment language is not a subject that is taught but rather the
vehicle in which all academic subjects are taught. Students learn their curriculum in
the foreign language. As the student progresses through the grades, English grammar and
writing are taught.
Why immersion?
Total immersion is the most effective way of developing foreign language proficiency.
The intensity of the immersion experience coupled with the amount of exposure to the
foreign language assures that students have the necessary language skills to deal with
the curriculum in the upper elementary grades. [1]
What are the keys to successful immersion programs?
Successful immersion programs are characterized by: (1) administrative support; (2)
community and parental support; (3) qualified teachers; (4) appropriate materials in
the foreign language; (5) time for teachers to prepare instructional materials in the
language; (6) and ongoing staff development. [1]
How does the La Escuela program work?
The students are immersed in the Spanish language daily with skilled native speakers
to gently guide them to fluency. We strive for academic excellence by utilizing tools
such as writing practices, phonics, math, science, crafts, singing, dance and play.
Cultural education is an invaluable part of our curriculum, as we educate the students
on the native cultures of many Spanish-speaking communities. We also offer English
grammar as part of our lessons.
When should my child start learning a foreign language?
The sooner the better. Studies have shown that the younger a child begins learning
a foreign language, the more proficient they become and they also have a much better
opportunity to use the language as a native speaker would.
What about older children and adults?
The Language Academy strives to bring language to all. For older children we offer
after school programs and summer camps. For adults and older children we offer Saturday
classes and private/semi-private tutoring. The Language Academy's offerings allow the
whole family to learn another language!
What type of curriculum does the La Escuela follow?
La Escuela follows the Core Knowledge curriculum. This curriculum is based on the
premise that children should gain knowledge about a core set of topics. The curriculum
is quite broad and allows children to expand on their knowledge of subjects with each
passing grade. For more information about our curriculum see out Curriculum page.
